Background Information

The images in this library represent the large number of plant photographs collected by the society, plus plants in the conservation scheme, plus images of their related seeds, and the plants for which we had seed packets in our last annual seed distribution. Images are freely available for use by members and non-members, provided the Society is always given an acknowledgement at the point of use.

We welcome contributions of more photographs with the following guidelines:

We need maximum resolution, the full sized image straight from your camera
Make sure the subject is in focus and properly lit
We will need your consent to the HPS being assigned the copyright for each image - you are still free to use your images as you please, but for stability of the image library we need to know we have a permanent right to use them, and provide them to others when requested. If you cannot grant the HPS the copyright then we must decline any images provided

The RHS has kindly given us permission, under licence, to use their Plant Name database to assist in the accuracy of names in this library.

Images and articles wanted

The HPS Image Library provides images for lecturers and other speakers, websites, magazines and other media outlets to use - completely free of charge. It also provides images for use within the HPS by, for example, the Seed Distribution Scheme, the Conservation Scheme and the HPS Newsletter. These images have been donated by keen gardeners and photographers. In other words, by people like you. We allow free use of images in the library, provided users quote the HPS as their source, so if you wish to retain copyright on your images, we regret we cannot accept them.

But we always need more images.

The image library welcomes almost all good quality images of plants, plant materials and gardens. Please email images, for inclusion in the image library, to the HPS Photo Librarian.

You don’t need a fancy camera or lots of equipment to take plant photos these days. Many smartphones have very good cameras built into them. Just make sure that it focuses on the plant that you want to photograph and that you tell us the name of the plant. Photographs of general garden views are also welcome.
