Summary and Key Information

The Hardy Plant Society is an organisation dedicated to promoting plant knowledge. We want to share the joy of gardening with a wider audience, including new, amateur, experienced, professional and non-professional gardeners.

We are committed to cultivating a world where people and plants thrive together. We aim to inspire both the wider public and our members to discover, learn, and grow with us, fostering a shared appreciation for and understanding of the essential role of plants in the world.

To do this, we want to work with like-minded gardening publications and programmes to share the extensive knowledge and experience of the society’s over 6,000 members. These range from professional horticulturalists, and experienced gardeners to novice first-time gardeners, each with a story to tell.

Our Members' Expertise

Expertise matched with your media's needs

We are happy to share our knowledge with you whether it's plant expertise or general practical gardening know-how.

If the expertise, you need is regarding plants, then we have Special Interest Groups that hold a wealth of knowledge about specific plants or groups of plants. We have members who are published authors who have written about particular plants.

For more general horticultural information we can put you in touch with our Horticultural Advisory Team or a professional horticulturist member within the Hardy Plant Society. We also have a wealth of knowledge and experience around propagation including an extensive seed exchange scheme.

Viewpoints

Contact us for an HPS opinion

We can provide an HPS opinion, view, and comment on any of the current gardening issues you are reporting on. We will be surveying our members for their views on some of these key issues and will be releasing the results via our web site, or you may wish to commission a survey in partnership with us. If so please contact marketing@hardy-plant.org.uk

Image Library

High Resolution Plant Photos

We have an extensive plant Image Library; these are collection of photos donated by members and available to view on our website, Plants and Seeds Library.  You can request high resolution images of all these photos. The society will retain the copyright and the Hardy Plant Society must be acknowledged as the source.

Garden Access

To our member's gardens

We are happy to put you in touch with members with gardens who would welcome film crews; some of these are gardens that haven’t been covered before. Please just let us know what you are looking for and we will introduce you to the garden owner.

Conservation

The HPS Conservation Scheme

The Hardy Plant Society has a National Conservation Scheme which aims to identify and preserve some of the plants in danger of being lost. Older cultivars which have proved their worth in the past are becoming harder to find.  You can talk to our community of Conservation volunteers about the plants involved and the successes and challenges of propagation.  For information about our conservation scheme please contact conservation@hardy-plant.org.uk

Local Contacts

Local group contacts

For local or regional radio, magazines, and newspapers we can put you in touch with your nearest HPS Group. Each of our regional groups is different but they have a wide range of activities and expertise. Just let us know what you are looking for so we can find the right contact for you.

Research

Helping with your research

Our website allows access to the back catalogues of The HPS journal The Hardy Plant, The Newsletter and Cornucopia including access to our historic publications. These contain many excellent articles written by our members about gardens, gardening, and plants.
