Officers
Steve Bustin - Chair
Steve Bustin has been a member of The Hardy Plant Society Sussex group for more than 15 years and describes joining HPS as one of the best decisions he’s ever made as a gardener.
He gardens in the city garden in Brighton that he shares with his husband and dog and counts Thalictrum ‘Elin’ as his (current) favourite hardy plant. He’s also a big fan of aeoniums and holds part of a dispersed National Collection of Noel Burr daffodils.
Steve is a former Chair of Seedy Sunday Brighton, the UK’s oldest and largest community seed swap event and has written about gardens and gardening for magazines including Amateur Gardening, Beautiful Gardens and US title Pith & Vigor. He has also previously opened his garden in the National Garden Scheme.
When he can be dragged out of his garden, he works internationally as a public speaking coach and event compere and can also be found performing in improv comedy and improvised musical theatre shows.
Mike Millington - Vice-Chair
Mike was brought up in rural Shropshire where he first learnt about plants from relatives and neighbours, tending their gardens and allotments. His working experience covered industry, software consultancy and committee work in local government. After living in a city flat for many years where his horticultural interests were limited to pots on the balcony, Mike moved out to the suburbs to a house where he created a garden from scratch and plants soon became his obsession with a particular interest in ferns, species cyclamen and exotics. Since retiring Mike has completed a BTEC in horticulture and joined the HPS in 2014.
Mike is a member of the Nottinghamshire Group. He says, ” The changing climate is going to present plant enthusiasts with increasing challenges and the knowledge and experience of plantspeople needs to be captured and made as widely available as possible.
Stuart Senior - Treasurer
Stuart Senior has been our Honorary Treasurer since 2016. He is a member of the Somerset Group. He is also a trustee, and Treasurer, of the Somerset Gardens Trust.
Maliya Price - Honorary Secretary
Maliya worked as a renumeration specialist for city based financial services. She has experience in dealing with regulatory requirements and managing multiple projects, with demanding timelines.

Maliya says, “My love of flowers knows no bounds. I take more photos of plants than my husband thinks is normal! I have a great fondness for the Society and will do my utmost to fulfill the role, whatever the challenges.”
