Hello Hardy Planters!

Welcome to the August 2025 round up of everything happening across the HPS this month. In this month’s video I bring news from my garden in Brighton—come rain or shine! A big thank you to Mike Millington for last month's video.

We need your input and involvement on all sorts of things this month: now is the time to buy your tickets for our Annual Lecture Day (also your opportunity to vote at the AGM); our search for new trustees; your help needed as we look to fill a postholder vacancy or two; ensuring joint members receive our emails; a call for photos and videos from your HPS events for our social media channels; a reminder to subscribe to Cornucopia and the latest updates on the website.

Watch the video and read below to find out more on all of these exciting projects.

The board have had lots of feedback on the proposed subscription increase, both positive and negative, and as this reaches your inbox we’ll be meeting to discuss it all so watch this space for any more news on this.

Steve Bustin, Chair HPS

If you prefer to read Mike's message above, the transcript can be downloaded here.

We would love to welcome new blood to the board of the society, there are two vacancies coming up at this years AGM. If you care about the society please think about getting involved and help shape the society for the future.

Drop me an email to find out more, we really need your involvement.

Steve, Chair HPS [email protected].

Some joint members have indicated that they would like both members to receive our all our member announcement emails (if they don't  share access to the primary member's email account, for example).

This can now be easily done using the form on this page - the primary member will need to log in but then the second email address can be added.

The 2025 Hardy Plant Society Annual General Meeting and Lecture Day is to be hosted this year by the Derbyshire Group and will take place on September 13th at the Eastwood Hall conference centre.

We hope you can join us for this year’s Hardy Plant Society Annual Lecture Day and AGM on September the 13th at Eastwood Hall in Nottingham. It’s a great opportunity to meet and chat to other members from across the country many of whom can’t attend their local group.

We have some excellent speakers:

  • Val Bourne is an award-winning garden writer, hands-on gardener, committed plantaholic and Vice President of the Hardy Plant Society and will be talking about ‘Colour in the Garden’
  • Troy Scott Smith, Head Gardener at Sissinghurst talking about ‘Gardening Through the Seasons’
  • Steve Bustin, Chair of the Hardy Plant Society will talk about his Brighton Garden 'Trowel and Error: Creating a city garden, one mistake at a time'

There are several local specialist nurseries attending so you will have the opportunity to purchase plants. You can find out more about the HPS Special Interest Groups, The Conservation Scheme and help us celebrate the achievements of Award winners.  Tickets are only £35 with lunch and £25 without lunch.

To find out more or to book go to https://hardy-plant.org.uk/agm

We look forward to seeing you there.

Ann Franks, HPS Trustee and Chair of Derbyshire Group

Marina Lindl (our social media postholder) would love to receive photos and videos from group events, and use them to promote your activities to our thousands of followers on social media.

This is a great way to show to the world how active we all are, and helps grow the society.

Anything will do, any photos or videos, and Marina can handle everything else. For large video files please consider using the free service WeTransfer to send them, or else contact Marina via email to make arrangements first.

Marina can be reach using [email protected]

The next edition of Cornucopia is coming up, which is available to everyone, both the Public and Members. Cornucopia contains a roundup of the best writing from around our local and special interest groups. It has some fascinating writing about plants and topics you may not have seen before.

  • UK members £3.50
  • Overseas members £5.00
  • Non-members £5.50

Subscribers receive two full colour editions per year, this is well worth doing, find out more at https://hardy-plant.org.uk/cornucopia

Our Seed Distribution Scheme is open for donations, it is the cheapest way to receive many packets of seeds of plants we all love to grow.

Plants are beginning to set seed, when the weather is dry get them into a paper bag and follow the guidance here on how to label, package and send them in to us for later in the year.

Our Horticultural Advice Team would love to hear about your plant and gardening challenges. If there's a plant giving you problems or an area of your garden that needs attention, send in your questions via the form here and our team will help.  That page also has a growing back catalogue of questions and answers that might help you too.

Would you like to get more involved with the HPS and bring your time and talents to bear on the future of the Society? We currently have a number of roles open and are looking for people who might like to come onboard and join our large team of much-valued volunteers.

It’s a great way to meet new Hardy Planters, expand your own knowledge and experience and help the Society to thrive.

Plant and Photo Librarian

We need someone to take ownership of the Plant Library and Photographic Competition. The role involves ensuring our plants are named correctly, handling image requests, and running the annual photo competition. The person would also work with other postholders on some new ideas in the pipeline about information we collect and publish on plants.

If you would like more details on any of these roles or to have a chat about what might be involved, please contact our Chair, Steve Bustin, on [email protected]. We are also very happy to look at people sharing roles as a ‘job share’ to help spread the workload, if you’d be interested in taking on the role with a friend.

If you haven't already please take a look at a new articles from our  contributors:

We always want to hear from anyone who can write about plants and gardening. If you have something you'd like to see published, please get in touch.

Below is a listing of Local & Special Interest Group Events around the Country. Most are open to guests for a fee. For more details click the link below and check with the organisers of the specific event for more details including the venue location.

Help us spread the benefits of plants and gardening. Our members tell us they feel relaxation, happiness, satisfaction, calmness and love from plants and gardening. We want to see these benefits reach everyone, and at the same time improve our environment.

Since 1957 we’ve been promoting plants and helping our members adapt to changes in our environment. Entirely member funded, we run a network of local groups around the country and are always looking to start more.
