Conservation Scheme information for Penstemon ‘Pensham St James’

  • Introduced: 2020
  • By: Worcestershire Group
  • Reason: Raised by Edward Wilson on his nursery in the village of Pensham, near Pershore, Worcestershire. One of the Pensham series that are stronger and hardier than some penstemons.
  • Verified by: Plant was originally sold by a school in Malvern to raise money for charity. Plant matches the breeders description (registered in 2000).
  • Description: Bold, large flowered, perennial plant.
  • Dimensions: 90cm x 90cm
  • Flowers: Long flower spikes carrying striking dark red flowers with a darker streaked throat.
  • Foliage: Broad mid-green lanceolate foliage. Semi-evergreen.
  • Soil: Any well-drained soil.
  • Aspect: Full sun or part-shade
  • Pests: Slugs and snails may damage young or weak foliage in spring.
  • Cultivation: In cold areas protect with a dry winter mulch and delay cutting back until late spring when no risk of frost.
  • Propagation: Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or semi-ripe cuttings in midsummer.
