Conservation Scheme information for Persicaria runcinata Needham’s form

- Introduced: 2017
- By: Shropshire Group
- Reason: Brought to UK from Nepal by plant explorer, Edward Needham, of Tregye Gardens in Cornwall and introduced to cultivation by John Carter of Rowden Gardens, Devon in 1990’s. It is possibly a hybrid that occurred naturally.
- Verified by: Purchased from Bide-a-Wee Cottage Nursery and matches images on the internet.
- Description: Compact plant, semi-evergreen trailing plant.
- Dimensions: 15cm x 60cm
- Flowers: Tiny bell-shaped clear pink flowers are held in almost spherical clusters, 0.5cm-1cm across, on trailing reddish stems and borne over a long period.
- Foliage: Mid-green, semi-evergreen leaves on red stems. Leaf blades are pinnatifid, with triangular terminal lobe
- Soil: Acidic to neutral rich soil that is consistently moist, but not water-logged.
- Aspect: Full sun or part-shade
- Pests: Generally no problems.
- Cultivation: Can tolerate a shaded position but flowers best with some sun and shelter from drying winds.
- Propagation: Stems form roots at nodes where it is good contact with the ground. New plants can then be separated from the parent plant to grow on.
